François Sergo Decius, known artistically as Sergo Decius, is one of Haiti’s most accomplished traditional percussionists. His life story, documented by Haïti Inter, reveals a journey marked by resilience: after a childhood accident, music became both therapy and destiny.

Trained at Saint-Vincent School and Holy Trinity Music School, he explored multiple instruments before dedicating himself to the Haitian drum, which he describes as “the voice of the ancestors.”

Sergo Decius is celebrated for:

his mastery of traditional Haitian rhythms (rada, nago, petro, yanvalou, banda, kongo),

his role as a guardian of vodou rhythms,

his powerful, spiritual, deeply rooted playing style,

his ability to blend ancestral tradition with contemporary expression.

He has performed with major Haitian artists such as Beethova Obas, Emeline Michel, Joe Trouillot, Guy Durosier, and major compas orchestras including Les Frères Déjean and Zenglen.

In the diaspora, he collaborates with groups like Zepeng (Boston) and the Caribbean jazz trio Coco Breeze, where he brings authentic Afro-Haitian rhythmic depth.

He has released two solo albums, including one dedicated entirely to Haitian sacred and traditional rhythms, a rare cultural preservation effort.
